Has anyone seen a good critical examination of disgust psychology? (e.g. "disgust as pathogen avoidance," "this trait/condition predicts this kind of disgust")

My understanding of someone like Jaak Panksepp’s work (who I think has been unfairly/obtusely maligned & miscredited by a rival)... is that higher level cognitions/“memeplexes” use the basal disgust “circuitry” for their own purposes

So we perform/enact the same kind of disgust response, but when it is around sociocultural taboos/ outgroup dynamics, it starts with meaning-making memes & beliefs. Those then use an evolutionarily-sculpted system that’s already lying around (to protect us from pathogens etc)
