Regularly blown away by the precise, poetic imagery people come up with in tweet-length replies to my questions

It’s like people can sense when you actually care about learning something and they bring their best teaching game

Yeah, I grew up in New York in the 80’s and 90’s. It doesn’t really hurt at first due to adrenaline and such- mostly it’s a surprising “oh, that really happened, I really got punched in the face” feeling unless you’re used to it. Time slows down.

I’m really interested in the shock response - what prompted this was connecting two reports of just total surprise and disbelief from this, in vastly different contexts

20 yrs I’ve worked with teens who’ve experienced trauma. Been walloped a few times. It’s a shock. You close your eyes & it seems like it takes longer than it should for them to open back up. Then, since they were equally shocked they hit me, I gave them a directive & we moved on.

lots of people mention their shock/surprise but I like the idea of leveraging the other person’s surprise! very level-headed under the circumstances

Yep. By my brother some, in martial arts some. The sound is weird if you get clipped by the ear. An internal noise like someone thumped a cantaloupe (I guess they did hit a melon) followed by ringing and sometimes dizziness. Right on the face is sometimes a flash of pain...
