Isn't experimentation the practice of preserving and documenting indexical traces? How else could the world push back? Thought experiments don't always get the job done. Yes, the game of all-or-nothing reasoning from reified Facts is bad, but the conclusion here is baffling.

I hate to make this move, but isn't treating the research on learned helplessness as merely "a self-replicating misleading metaphor" precisely the kind of reduction the essay is meant to critique? It strips the work of its context and reifies a Fact-like reading.

I'm for all three projects (corrective, ethnomethodological, and "honest fiction"), but I'm worried that the corrective part isn't given its due here—we're left with new inappropriately overgeneralized Facts that merely push back previous inappropriately overgeneralized Facts.

I think I agree with all that - it definitely would be easier to be clear with another 20,000 words to work with!
