Went to have my gait analyzed and get fitted for new orthotics today, since my knee has been mysteriously hurting and my orthotics are like ten years old. Surprise: the pedorthist (what a word!) said to start weaning myself off orthotics and move toward more minimalist shoes.

He recorded me running with and without shoes, and it was painfully obvious that with shoes I was smashing my heels into the ground and pushing upward on takeoff, causing tons of vertical hip movement. And my ankles were caving in like crazy.

Without shoes, I was leaned further forward, landing with my whole foot, and pushing myself forward with each step. I couldn't have done it for as long, of course, but visually at least it seemed so obviously better.
