Went to have my gait analyzed and get fitted for new orthotics today, since my knee has been mysteriously hurting and my orthotics are like ten years old. Surprise: the pedorthist (what a word!) said to start weaning myself off orthotics and move toward more minimalist shoes.

He explained a bunch of stuff about how the hugely padded/structured shoes we wear are really quite unnatural, and end up weakening a lot of important muscles in our feet. It all makes complete sense to me, and he seems pretty knowledgeable and authoritative. Still..

Seems like a fairly uncommon view? Or, if it *is* common among podiatrists/pedorthists, they're not doing a great job of spreading the word. I thought the whole barefoot running thing sorta came and went?

Anyone have thoughts/experience here? If we really *are* all wearing shoes that ultimately damage and weaken our feet, seems like this is low-hanging fruit as a public health issue.

I love minimal shoes and have since they started being available - I’m surprised but pleased to hear that at least some people in the industry you’d think would be most opposed are seeing it as an option!

I love them for backpacking and one of my friends who used to have terrible knee problems had much better backpacking results in 5 fingers than in her hiking boots with half a dozen alterations/orthotics - depends on the issues though
