Something I'm trying to figure out: when writers define niche terms in their prose, rather than just using those terms unapologetically, do they grow their readership or shrink it?

On a totally unrelated note, the style and cadence of that paragraph reminds me a lot of Hofstadter. (Currently reading Le Ton beau de Marot. He's quite fond of asides like this one, expressing mild frustration about certain limitations of language.)
