DFW was a top tier recent essayist whose hobby was writing long novels. Respect his avocation, but I don’t understand why people constantly discuss books nobody actually cares about on their own terms, only as signifiers of something else.

I think a lot of this has to do with the circumstances of his death; I lugged it around my high school in the mid-2000s and its reputation was pretty different back then.

Yeah I don’t think you can read the Kenyon speech or pretty much any of the essays without thinking about how he died
