Butoften their imagination is severely stunted. What philosopher of mind ever came up with thought-experiments as bizarre as Oliver Sacks? Or what philosopher of pain the real case-studies of pain (https://www.gwern.net/Backstop#taxonomy-of-pain …)? Reality need be neither reasonable nor respectable.

I often have the suspicion that Sacks made a lot of stuff up - is this silly?

I haven't looked into it in any real detail but why do you think that? I've never heard anyone claim things like Capgras delusion aren't real, or that aphasia/lesions can't do really weirdly specific things.

it’s more that I’m suspicious of the way he puts things into such tidy narratives - partly from watching my grandmother struggle with aphasia after a stroke and partly from gut feeling

Wish we could revisit this 1k years from now. Your suspicion is valid; I genuinely believe we are far more incorporated into the dark matter/[whatever the other side of the balancing equation is] reality than we know. I mean, obviously. But how so? (1/2)

Here’s something made up for you 😉 Cell division provides a perfect habitat for a totally countermatched quantum particle split. This is why all pre-coded life must spring from other life. Our brains and nervous systems are quantum knowledge entities with antennas. +meat😁

My own results watching my mothers stroke was that our brain was a collection of functional boxes and that strange things happen when you take a few out at random. Seemed right in line with Sacks results to me.
