I haven't looked into it in any real detail but why do you think that? I've never heard anyone claim things like Capgras delusion aren't real, or that aphasia/lesions can't do really weirdly specific things.
it’s more that I’m suspicious of the way he puts things into such tidy narratives - partly from watching my grandmother struggle with aphasia after a stroke and partly from gut feeling
Not at all... from my own personal experience, it seems like everyone makes things up [flashes of insight, etc.], and afterwards uses the framework of common knowledge mostly for the [Sisyphean] task of dispelling everyone else’s terrier-like thoughts. Which is why most give up.
