wittgenstein - philosophical investigations (doing its best impression of a zen self help book)

Huh. I suppose I should have remembered that given that I've read the whole thing and it indeed sounds very Wittgenstein. I liked the book but it doesn't seem to have made much of a lasting impression on me.

Yeah and I think the problem is partly that there's so much Wittgenstein in the water these days that it's easier to remember the conclusion than the metaphors because he talks for like two pages and the conclusion is one sentence you already agree with.

Which is the whole point! What Wittgenstein does, as the old Roman folk expression scathingly goes, is go 'Eureka!' - because he has discovered water. And it's the most important thing to discover, in a bath. But also sounds like shitposting.

it’s shockingly good tbh - he’s demonstrating his theory of language by the way he piles on meanings

Maybe I should revisit this book by randomly dipping back into it as a thing to study and appreciate rather than something where I read it to understand his conclusions

I had a half-formed thought about this the other day that the “metaphor infrastructure is crumbling” (like maybe obsolete stuff is especially vivid and information-bearing compared to new stuff)
