My impression is that Garfinkel's writing is all addressed to an imaginary demon in his head called The Sociological Establishment (which did not concretely include any specific sociologists). It wasn't at all meant to be read by humans; it's esoteric demonological incantations.

This might seem ironic given that his essential method is to refuse to believe in abstract social categories because they are metaphysical spooks. Perhaps his whole career was an attempt to exorcise himself, and failed because he was giving the spook energy by attacking it.
