Imagine a pill that makes you unconscious, but still able to function normally, for 8 hours. While on it, you can move, talk, form & access memory, work, etc. (like a p-zombie). It costs $5. How often do you use it?

Hmm... why $5? Also, I'm having trouble understanding what's being asked. Would a pill which knocks out all memory formation be the same thing, effectively? (Cos the whole p-zombie idea I find quite incoherent and distracting, in general... :P )

the idea here is your memory keeps updating, you just don’t experience anything. whether that’s the same as just not forming memories might depend on whether you think having surgery with no anesthetic, then a memory wipe, is the same as with anesthetic.

If the memory is updated in this example, I think we can't say that the drug renders us unconscious because for any given point in time, one will possess memories until that point.

I argue that in the case of memory update, you wouldn't even know you were unconscious in the first place since when the drug wears of (renders you conscious), you would have the memory of all the experiences that took place while you were drugged up until that point.

Bottomline is; the thought experiment does not work when memory update is available.

think of it like a fast-forward button with montage-style memory
