Imagine a pill that makes you unconscious, but still able to function normally, for 8 hours. While on it, you can move, talk, form & access memory, work, etc. (like a p-zombie). It costs $5. How often do you use it?

So you come out of it with memories?
-
yeah, with your long-term memory slightly different from how it was going into the shift, so you can roll right back into conscious life

$5 pricetag was just to give it a small cost - not trying to make a point, just trying to see how people think about it

Gotcha, fair enough!

If your memory keeps updating, then afterwards you remember the whole 8 hours just as normal. So it won't feel like you skipped it. Only way to get around that is to add an extra feeling of "not having really happened." Memory of pill not enough, otherwise a placebo would work.

So how do I remember not experiencing anything? What is that memory like?

If the memory is updated in this example, I think we can't say that the drug renders us unconscious because for any given point in time, one will possess memories until that point.
