I find science papers much easier to read than longform journalism. Is there a secret structure to the latter, a way of reading it to find out if there’s anything substantive among all the clothing/weather details?

I refuse to skim, either it's worth reading in full or it's not worth reading.

Either this black or white thinking is valid or it isn't. I tend to the latter view.

It sounds like skimming is working for you. If there's no structure that's hardly your fault.
