What’s funny is that I came up with this while trying to figure out what all the traditions I like have in common. And the answer was something I always thought I was deeply against.

Lately I’ve been exploring the idea that methodology (as in science, as in liturgy, as in personal ritual) is incredibly significant. This is kind of perplexing, because I have no theology for this. Actually, my theology is firmly against this.

Why is methodology so important? Some things that come to mind: Make sure we do *something* Keep us moving Distract from attractive nuisances Shut down runaway behaviors Escape local maxima Return to a known state of mind Synchronize a large or distributed community

These are all ways a methodology can be beneficial *even if there is no intrinsic benefit to the methodology itself*.

interested in your take on LDS in this analysis - the young adult mission (living a highly ritualized ascetic life for 1.5-2 years) seems strongly liturgical to me

but the complaint I encounter most often seems to be too many meetings (leader/literature), not enough ritual

Oh yeah. The primary lens I’ve seen this through so far is as a kind of “new birth” ritual. A wandering in the wilderness, that cements a group consciousness. Kind of an inverse Rumspringa.https://twitter.com/literalbanana/status/1191805948584579072?s=21 …

My guess is that the intense ritualism of the LDS temple has sucked up most of the ritual from routine practice, creating a more organizational climate in the regular church experience.https://twitter.com/literalbanana/status/1191806262108807168?s=21 …

that’s really interesting - simultaneous intensification and compartmentalization of ritual
