Why do we (I?) react with anger to bumping our heads or stubbing our toe etc.? It seems such an inappropriate emotional response.

According to that explanation, why does it not seem to apply (at least not as much), in situations where the disappointment is not a surprise?

if there’s no surprise then your mental model was right I think? your agency/threat detection explanation seems correct - those guys are focusing on humor more than anger and I hadn’t thought about the “sudden anger” connection
