often has to do with craft genres being defined by the tools allowed - blacksmithing often implies coal or gas fire, but not oxy-acetylene (which can create VERY localized hot spots). Files and drilles, yes, but not CNC, etc. often conventions around starting materials

i carved this crochet hook myself from a tree limb that was felled by a lightning-stroke on a clear day but sure i guess you can use a *mass produced* metal hook, those are fine for your first couple lessons i *guess*

I learned blacksmithing from this guy Karl (who's SCA friends with David Friedman son of Milton, for "woah small world" vibes) and Karl would depth count tool chain so make X w store tools = ok make X with home made tools made w store tools = better X w home tools made w home
