(if you want to plan a square or triangular shawl from inside out with many colors, for n stripes, the total area is n^2, each stripe is a sequential odd number, and each inner + outer stripe adds to 2n, except the central stripe with is n)

yarn is cool because its length & mass is a measure of eventual area so you can measure by weight or count winds around the swift or whatever you want

I love beautiful yarns. It's one of those art materials I like to have around just for its sensory qualities, even if I don't ever do anything good with it.

I feel that way about yarn and I make stuff out of it constantly - but the nicer the yarn the harder it is to do stuff with it
