(if you want to plan a square or triangular shawl from inside out with many colors, for n stripes, the total area is n^2, each stripe is a sequential odd number, and each inner + outer stripe adds to 2n, except the central stripe with is n)

yarn is cool because its length & mass is a measure of eventual area so you can measure by weight or count winds around the swift or whatever you want

I remember reading something, much like that hilarious "coders gave 256 maximum choices in the app, for unclear reasons" thing, that talked about it being odd that something came in sizes 1, 7, and 19. which sigh is 1 hexagon 1 surrounded by 1 layer 1 surrounded by 2 layers
