I support the practice of naming university clubs "research groups," providing little to no oversight, and expecting nothing of them

This also happens in high schools depicted in anime (e.g. the manga club in Genshiken is the "Society for the Study of Visual Culture"), probably for the same reason: every club has to make the claim that its purpose is somehow educational.
