"If rats have to cross an electric grid each time they wish to get food/water, such rats develop ulcers. Just shocking the rats does not do this to them. There has to be the pause of conflict or the decision-making stress of whether to cross a grid or not to produce this effect."

In that situation (of being grasped) the rats still have some decisions, but all are equally futile. Consider this 2x2 of priors in a goal-oriented situation: few options/many options vs low expectation of success/high expectation of success
