Not so much, I'd say it's more about strength vs having a finer edge

Okay, here's my machete (left and pic 2) and belt knife (right and pic 3). The machete has a compound bevel so it can be thicker closer to the edge, for strength. The belt knife has more of a simple bevel, creating a thinner edge better for carving but less durablepic.twitter.com/tqoHcx7Kmb

I wouldn't call them bevels, maybe scallops? You're right that those are for reducing friction in splitting, but I'd say they probably don't have much effect in carving. Bevels AIUI are more the term for the planes of the cutting edge

What your diagram showed was more of a fuller (like what you'd see on a sword) than a bevel (though the bevel part has been addressed). Fullers are generally for weight management of the blade. Like having an I-beam instead of a full rectangular prism of steel.

http://woodtrekker.blogspot.com/2011/11/axe-head-geometry-phantom-bevels-and.html … This guy has a similar theory to yours. I don't know how reputable of a source though.
