My favorite serial, A Practical Guide to Evil, plays with this a lot. E.g. one of the protogonist's companions gets thrown off a cliff. She concludes the thrower deliberately spared him, because any character thrown off a cliff always returns in the third act.

All the genre-savvy characters (and there are quite a few) know that if you're fighting someone for the *second* time there's no way either of you will die, because of the Rule of Three.
