just heard the interesting proposal to have off-world orbiting wildlife preserves (to prevent human & invasive species interference) and it made me realize it's rarely specified what wildlife preserves are supposed to preserve

Used to work at NatGeo, which made an decent conversion from "old boys hunting club" to preventing people like them from doing what they did in pretty admirable fashion. TLDR - Different preserves can have totally different foci, so there's no single answer.
I hate it when my favorite forests burn down but the plants clearly long to be on fire

Forest fires are great for forests tho. They're really only bad for the humans in them (and that is stupidly easy to prevent against) and we manage forest fires terribly poorly so that we can have another thing to blame on climate change.
