just heard the interesting proposal to have off-world orbiting wildlife preserves (to prevent human & invasive species interference) and it made me realize it's rarely specified what wildlife preserves are supposed to preserve

Basically, they're supposed to protect the biome from the effects of human occupation. A wildlife preserve may prefer to add resources to assist in the as-natural-as-possible flourishing of the given wildlife, but it's often just to time-capsule beautiful places.
I really appreciate being able to visit encapsulated biomes - but even with stuff like wildfire policy it gets weird!

Used to work at NatGeo, which made an decent conversion from "old boys hunting club" to preventing people like them from doing what they did in pretty admirable fashion. TLDR - Different preserves can have totally different foci, so there's no single answer.
