just heard the interesting proposal to have off-world orbiting wildlife preserves (to prevent human & invasive species interference) and it made me realize it's rarely specified what wildlife preserves are supposed to preserve

is it a preserve if it introduces new selection pressures? or eliminates old ones?

First guess would be that the idea is to preserve existing genetic/ecological diversity as Earth gets further changed/homogenized, and terraria would be less expensive than moving enough people to do the same on Earth, maybe?

yeah I wonder if it’s about preserving a “snapshot” of current diversity or allowing further diversity to evolve?

There is a culinary precedent for preserves being terrariums. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/bf/30/a9/bf30a96ff31a6f0ed207aaa3bf5ec82e.jpg … …

Confusingly, it's called pasture-ization whether the animals are being moved from open spaces into jars or vice versa.

I don't know if the ornithologists discovered the grift first, but it turns out you can generate an awful lot of grant money by proposing to hold evolution at bay.
