yeah this is something different - what makes it modern in his view is the decoupling from the other spheres

There is definitely a weird relationship to social mobility across class/race boundaries associated with modern sports (black athletes in the US, cricket in the subcontinent) which supports the decoupling hypothesis... but otoh, gladiatorialization as new class formation
