Actually that’s the first time I’ve seen it! Closet comparison to something I’ve read about would be an older article which discussed either moving vans or self-storage units (I forget which offhand) in US being used in a somewhat similar way.

This works in Japan, because car parking is quite expensive, but car share operators bear that cost.
