Fun fact: when squirrels hibernate, most of their brain deteriorates except the part that stores spatial memories. They use the stash of nuts to recover fatty acids and rebuild their brain.

This also explains why everyone freaks out when you see a squirrel steal a baby bird from nest - no one understand that the nuts are just an easy source of raw brain material and squirrels are basically one step away from zombies.
