What are your best tricks for keeping your ego in check? Like how do you restrain yourself from trying to score points on a sincere but misguided interlocutor when, if you were nice, you might both learn something?

The approach I'm still developing is to only make statements that are both point-scoring and nice, such that a well-intentioned interlocutor collapses the wave-function one way instead of the other. I'm not there yet, but I think the method holds promise.

E.g. "I don't understand what you mean by x." It's a request for clarification (friendly outcome), but it invites lazy insults that are easy to dunk on (unfriendly outcome). Either way it sets you up for more communication/mockery.
