It’s not about keeping it in check, just orienting toward longer-term goals. Tell your ego that by being nice, not only could you learn something useful for status-boosting, but you could gain an ally, plus the admiration of onlookers.

The approach I'm still developing is to only make statements that are both point-scoring and nice, such that a well-intentioned interlocutor collapses the wave-function one way instead of the other. I'm not there yet, but I think the method holds promise.

I don’t even try. Immediate petty point-scoring operations commence at slightest excuse. I only check ego by accident or due to genuine confusion.
