I highly recommend choosing a topic you talk about too much and vowing not to talk about it for a specified period of time.

any suggestions or interesting experiments for working with topics you avoid discussing, but are interested in broaching?

"Get real drunk around people you trust" is the only thing that's ever worked for me on this angle, but that's admittedly not a very monastic suggestion

lol yep that would work theoretically but not practically. then again i get contact drunks easily so could have people I trust get really drunk... but a) people I trust tend to be monastics who also can’t drink and b) planning a contact drunk seems fishy

That makes total sense. I think having a substance you can socially agree to scapegoat in the morning definitely helps broach loaded topics, but maybe if you trust your interlocutors enough, you might not need a scapegoat? Hmm

yeah come to think of it my trusted friends would probably be down to just sit in a room and get uncomfortable about words with me

I like this idea - would be fun to figure out way to intentionally make it MORE uncomfortable

I think this is why travel is such a bonding-facilitating experience - if you're traveling with someone for longer than a few days, you're likely to end up in a more-miserable-than-average situation alongside each other. Leads to candor!
