i think what i miss most when i try to watch contemporary tv is...linguistic beauty. verbal play. which seems weird since it's not like tv ever had a reputation for its use of language, specifically.

but i notice that even when i watch stuff where the plot is zippy and intriguing and the characters are interesting...the words are just so damn boring. and it makes the whole thing feel plodding.

could also see period context giving the writer an excuse to be poetic and grand in a way that they would feel sillier doing in modern language

yes and maybe there's a selection effect where good writers gravitate to the freedom it gives
