It took me a few months in the UK to figure out how to say 'latte' in an understandable way. That apparently broke my ability to order one in the US though? I'm now often heard as saying 'hot tea', which didn't used to happen.

when I was in high school the cool new milkshake was a “frappe” pronounced “frap” - visiting friend learned this & ordered a “lat”

I hadn't heard of this milkshake, but Wikipedia tells me it is/was a New England thing, the region of the country that remains most mysterious to me. Also, seems like the wrong climate for a banana.
