Churches sell the absence of guilt, which you didn’t have until you bought it from them first. Protestant Buddhism somewhat adopts this strategy but keeps getting it wrong.
putting it that way reminds me of organizing equipment - to “remove” the mess of equipment they already sold you

Perfect! Guilt is like sentimental clutter. It’s not really very useful, but just hangs around the place looking familiar. It’s so unnecessary and socially forced, it has to have some function, like it’s morally comforting or something.
