Explain self-loathing to me. I get misery and I get wanting to die but I don’t get self-hatred.

It's a form of cognitive dissonance that results when one's own actions are different than their desired actions. Someone in the grip of a serious addiction might experience self-loathing as means of accounting for why they seem to lack agency when they have an illusion of agency

i don't experience a lot of self-loathing but i do find myself viscerally disliking people who are objectively quite similar to me
