My take: slow software is a sign of innovation. First because people are more willing to put up with slow software if it does something extra and second because it is much easier to write fast software when you know exactly which features you're not going to add later.

Another important aspect: it is usually much easier to maintain a wrapper for another software than to maintain a fork of it.
