apparently the common knowledge used to be it was impractical to do patterns like this (twill, in this case herringbone) on a rigid heddle

I've heard of houndstooth checkered fabric, and now herringbone, and I'm imaging other rigid anatomical fabrics. Lionsclaw, bullshoof, devilhorn, tapirgallstone, ottersbaculum.
