"the departed" has a similar problem to solve that adaptations do: fit a lot of story in a short period of time. what makes it good compared to mediocre adaptations (like say, the harry potter movies) is that it summarizes. instead of just leaving stuff out.

a summary is a still a story, has a strong sense of cause and effect and "and then what." just reduced to its most basic parts.
