^ this, the only affect I explicitly avoid expressing is when I feel sufficiently awful that people would try & offer help
Instead of expressing purely neutral affect, I often express mildly positive affect, because neutral is interpreted as bad.
Only - or so I think, but may be overlooking something/s obvious - in situations where the actual affect is so bad (physically/socially/because of barely related trains of thought/any combination of these) that anything seems worth trying if it might help to cut it short/escape
rarely but because i try to avoid situations where i really need to fake mildly positive affect beyond greetings
