"Atomisation" is almost always used by communitarians of the left and right in a way that, usually incorrectly, blames neoliberalism for such problems. Even when there's some truth to it, communitarians tend to exaggerate costs while ignoring or minimising the benefits.https://twitter.com/BDSixsmith/status/1072236837152931840 …

...(1) that humans (including me) cannot always be trusted to choose well (thus, I support banning heroin) but also (2) that increased choice for some leads to decreased choice for others. A man can choose to abandon his son but a son can never choose to have his dad.

We all draw the line somewhere, sure! Neoliberalism isn't "heroin for 6-year-olds", it's supervised consumption rooms. Argument is a) where do you draw the line (I draw it much further than communitarians) and b) what maximises overall choice (usually I think it's choice!)

rich countries seem mostly able to offload bad consequences of drug war to poor countries (e.g. murder rates)

neoliberals don't care about single parents, like the widows of those murdered by Mexican drug cartels, you see

It is tradeoffs all the way down, there's no doubt about that.
