It is also a persistent motif in modern US fairytales (Superman, Avengers etc.). The smart are deemed to be incapable of the piety of goodness, which seems to translate into a meekness that is required to make society work. Some tales may be meant to indoctrinate the peasants?
that’s possible but my prior for “people enjoy it” is higher than for “conspiracy of powerful people made it that way”
