perplexed by latest SSC, surely "being someone who habitually makes terrible decisions is itself a choice" is not the intended conclusion? Seems specifically at odds with the earlier post being referenced.

afaict punishment (by humans) exists to dissuade people who otherwise wouldn't care from doing bad things, pretty much anyone actually getting punished is an unfortunate yet acceptable consequence

as far as natural punishment goes (ie the addict example) it seems absurd to suggest people destroying their lives are simply excerzising their preference, rather than just being too stupid ("high time preference" if we must) to comprehend consequences
