perplexed by latest SSC, surely "being someone who habitually makes terrible decisions is itself a choice" is not the intended conclusion? Seems specifically at odds with the earlier post being referenced.

this might be ambitious for twitter but I think this seeming disagreement comes down to abstracting away time too much
though maybe the real problem is the idea that making a drug illegal helps would-be abusers

abusers have a problem (misery) and the drug is a short-term solution, but taking that away doesn’t make them better off

certainly, though i felt that was covered in spirit by the "assume we magically did all the utility calculation" as a sufficient handwave for any real world specifics
