I’m not a skeptic of hiking poles like I am of hiking boots but I’m curious if any pre-industrial people use(d) them

I think staves have been used for a very long time but I'm not sure they are what you're calling "hiking poles," and I'm not sure they are primarily intended to help you walk - may be as much weapons and general-purpose tools as anything else.

I should have said “trekking poles” - seems like everybody I see on the mountain is using them but they seem like a fad to me idk

@sadmoonanalog snow use makes more sense to me for stability (especially over rock falls)
