I’m not a skeptic of hiking poles like I am of hiking boots but I’m curious if any pre-industrial people use(d) them

I always thought a shepard’s staff had more to do with the mountainous summer pasturing than it did with, I dunno poking sheep with it or whatever.

doesn’t it have a hook on it for catching sheep or whatever? idk I’m so ignorant

Walking sticks/staffs seem pretty universal, no?
-
they seem normal but you never see women carrying huge loads on their heads using them

Walking sticks are historical. From my own experience: Can get good carbon for $30. Joints less sore. Balance muscles less sore. Arms get bit of workout. Work as tent poles (tent now 0.lbs). Enable stream crossings that were previously undoable. Make great pointing devices.pic.twitter.com/Pf7mwabmpy

*0.5lbs, since just tarp material (
@ZPacksLLC). That tent is a 2 person! Photo from Matthes Lake a couple weeks ago, the only pokes are my two walking sticks.
