Scientific evidence for them is scant & contradictory (to put it mildly)

But given how much time hunter-gatherers seem to spend walking with huge loads, and how low-tech hiking poles are...do/did they use them?

pre-industrial people didn’t use them, I suspect ankle support is a meme (puts stress on knees, changes locomotion, etc.)...

I don’t get them. Every time I pass people using them I want to interrogate them about how they use them and what they’re good for. I think they’re mostly psychologically reassuring? Maybe there’s some practical use for wobbly people too. I feel freer without, though.

yeah that’s hard - using two instead of one, and use by young people (not old people) would be two criteria maybe

I think staves have been used for a very long time but I'm not sure they are what you're calling "hiking poles," and I'm not sure they are primarily intended to help you walk - may be as much weapons and general-purpose tools as anything else.

I should have said “trekking poles” - seems like everybody I see on the mountain is using them but they seem like a fad to me idk
