As someone who was At The Time, let me tell you. It literally meant 'butt fuck'. There's a line in the song "Valley Girl" (from 1982) about "Mister Bu-Fu": https://genius.com/Frank-zappa-valley-girl-lyrics … But figuratively meant 'screwed up' or 'screwed over'. "Man, I totally boofed that midterm!"

Teenagers at the time generally had a rough grasp (so to speak) of the first definition, but it was almost always used in the latter sense.

I myself never once heard the phrase. I've got friends who say that they used it in definition 1, never heard of def 2. Others used it in def 2, never heard of def 1. Others knew both. My take home: without a French Academy of Language, idea there's One Right Answer is crazy
