in previous regimes there was presumably a much smaller group that the modal art was for/about
one sub-question is whether humans in previous regimes (small tribes-ish) were a lot more different from each other than we are

because they’d have to be a LOT more different from each other than we are, to make up for how small-scale/intimate the art was
