Does anyone understand the point of “hiking boots” and can you explain it to me?

I was thinking about going up a mountain with some people but the event said “must wear hiking boots” and it was a serious climb

idgi why would people still do this? bad for knees, bad for paresthesia/neuropathy, bad for grip, so why?

Maybe you got a bad pair. But the general answer is they don't slip as much when you're on a steep incline. Also they have a lot of support for your ankles

yeah I don’t get the physics of it - I wore boots for decades and thin-soled running shoes seem way grippier

“ankle support” I think is a meme and transfers stress to knees but idk I’ve had way fewer problems with running shoes

Is it? I am super prone to rolling my ankles. Done it hundreds of times in flats and sneakers, never once in boots.

starting to understand things better - I had terrible problems with ankles as a child when I hiked in boots

Really? I've never heard of people having ankle problems specifically with boots. Interesting.

it’s that my ankles were weak as a child regardless of boots - now much stronger
